Hashing is a process that uses cryptological mechanisms to encrypt electronic documents and messages using algorithms. The data is passed through a formula in application software that encrypts a document. The data may be of any size, the hash algorithms convert it into a string of 32 unreadable characters. If the document is manipulated the hash value will change and this is a security feature that detects manipulation for the new hash will not match with the original one. The digital signatures are primarily meant to authenticate the document and when it is certified by the CA it identifies the sender. This works fine on electronic passages where the identity of the sender is not known.

The certificate contains information about a user's identity like name, photo ID, Pincode, Nation, email address, the  DSC issue date the name of the Certifying Authority or CA. The DSC also contains the public key that is represented as an encrypted hash and this is the sender's signature in electronic form. The public is used to decode the electronic document or message.

The main purpose of the DSC is to identify the sender and the above content is enough to do that.  Thus digital signatures are electronic forms of signatures that are represented as a hash in encrypted form.  While the main function of the private key is to encrypt the electronic document or message the public key works to decode them. It is not possible to manipulate the document since the public key gets changed while manipulating and the receiver is easily able to find that out.

 What Are Certified Digital Signatures?

The certificates are used by the certification agencies by CCA or Controller of Certification Agencies. This is valid under the provision of the IT Act 2000. There are a total of 14 Certification Agencies (LA) authorized by the CCA to issue Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs). The details of these Certification Agencies are available on the MCA portal. However to widen the net authorized partners are appointed by the LA who can issue the certificates. These agencies or partners act through the authorized CAs they represent.
