Steel Fabrication Industry Status

The status of the steel fabrication industry in the USA depends much upon the construction activity. The slowdown in the construction industry results in a slowdown in the fabrication industry. This is suggestive of the relationship between the two.

The supply chain in this sector is dependent upon major players. The producers of steel, service centers involved in the storage and preprocessing to some extent, fabricators, and erectors.

Steel Fabricators manufacture structural components used in the construction industry for buildings. They also fabricate components that are used in old buildings as replacements and addition. Hence the overall status of the fabricators is much dependent upon the construction scene in the USA. Though fabricators of steel also process parts of bridges and other sectors the heavy reliance is on construction. In the year 2006 to 2007, the building activity was at its peak which has now slithered down.

Fabrication is a lengthy work with multitudes of processes, hence the cost of operations is high. The requirement for workers and skilled professionals is also high. The the impact on job scene is palpable whence the slowdown takes place. At peak total employment was over two million with more than 2500 companies participating.

From total revenue of twenty billion dollars, the industry in 2018 is projected to grow by 4 to 5 % which is not very encouraging.

Crude Prices & Metal Fabrication

The industry is related and often works as a complex web. This is an ecosystem that requires deep dwelling in order to perceive the ups and downs possible while fixing the business strategies.

From over a hundred dollars to around fifty dollars that have been the story of oil per barrel. For the global industry, this is like manna from heaven.  The cheaper the raw material the better it is for manufacturers - fabricators included. Not only the industry the falling prices have given consumers a big relief.

The dropping oil prices initially did not affect projects from the oil and gas industry but are bound to impact negatively. Large projects from this sector will keep the metal fabrication industry afloat. The resultant benefit of reducing oil prices will definitely impact favorably. The increase in oil production at the country level will act as a balancing factor.

The lowering of oil prices will negate the rising cost of labor and other manufacturing inputs as far as the fabrication sector is concerned. Oil is a major variable as far as metal fabrication is concerned. Steel is dumped at lower rates in the US aided by lower shipping costs.

Though demand from the energy sector may make a substantial impact on projects the uptick in the construction industry will act as a great leveler. A bright future awaits fabricators in the USA.

Steel Fabrication Equipment & Tools

The World has witnessed a complete revolution with the development of steel its emancipation from the mined ore and eventual refinement. The alloying technique has given birth to complex metals with varied properties. This has led to the development of complex components required to withstand extreme temperatures, stress and acquire properties that are required for a particular function in a specific environment.

Steel is a derivative of iron which is found as ore in nature. The metal is used in fabrication but its parent iron is also used as such. Hence most fabricators are using all forms of metal including iron.

On a fabrication floor, a number of equipment and tools are set up depending upon the designs to be executed to form an end product belonging to a particular segment.  For example, the fabrication of building components, complex machines, and infrastructure projects all are specific to the manufacturing industry. Hence fabrication is limited by scope to the area of the owner's expertise and capabilities.

The equipment or tools range from small and simple to big and complex. The list is large as mentioned below.

  • Lathes
  • Band Saws
  • Manual Rod Benders
  • Welders Kit
  • Welding Machines
  • Cutting Machines
  • Body Hammers
  • Jet Milling & Drilling Machine
  • Shop Presses
  • Bench Presses
  • Pipe Notching Dyes
  • Pipe Notcher
  • Strut Cutters
  • Combination Benders
  • English Wheels
  • Hammers
  • Metal Shears
  • Sheet Metal Brakes
  • Iron Workers
  • Bending Brakes
  • Punch Press
  • Frame Press
  • Metal Forming Hand Tools
  • Tool Stands

Above are listed some of the tools and equipment which are part of the trade. The fabrication industry has given rise to large-scale simple and complex ancillary, tools and equipment manufacturing industry in the USA. With the rise in the economy which leads to an increase in steel fabrication and ironworks the related manufacturing also offers great potential to industry leaders.

Steel Industry in China

Steel production increased rapidly during the post-World War 2 era. Many countries developed at a rapid rate with amazing construction booms. Steel making process involves the use of iron ore and scrap. The process includes the exclusion of impure elements like nitrogen, excess carbon, sulfur silicon, etc. In order to obtain various grades of steel elements like vanadium, manganese, nickel, and chromium are added during production. The introduction of Bessemer and Siemens-Martin processes revolutionized production globally.

The capital reforms under Deng Xiaoping gave a big boost to Chinese industrialization.  lagging much behind the global steel industry the reforms brought about a paradigm shift and augured production.

By 2011 China became the largest producer of steel in the World. The production rose to over 680 million tonnes accounting for forty-five percent of global production. This is despite stiff competition by major players and unstable prices of raw materials. As per the trend in almost every sector, the industry experienced a price rise within this period.

The production continued to peak until its decline in the year 2016 which resulted in a stock market crash in that country. This came about as a result of other countries exports, especially from Russia and Ukraine.

The largest steel producers in China are Hesteel Group with production being 31 million tonnes which is much below Arcelor Mittal. The latter is the largest steel producer in the World with 116 million tonnes. Other major producers of this commodity are Jiangsu Shagang, Ansteel, and  Baosteel groups. India ranks fourth in the production of steel and is undergoing a rise in production along with new entrants like Brazil and South Korea.

Structural Steel - Product Reuse & Recycling

Structural Steel is used in construction with an added advantage over traditional construction methods. This form of construction is gaining ground day by day as the fabrication industry advances. The new technology uses lightweight structural steel to fabricate building parts. These parts are made in units and not at construction. Eventually, they are installed at the construction and fitted at suitable junctures on the building being built.

Product Re-use

This is one of the greatest advantages of lightweight steel. At the end of its life, it can be reused as a new product in buildings under construction.  In case of re-use, no processing is involved.  The steel structures are reused more in some sectors than others.

The discouraging factors are lack of standardization and difficulty in assessment of composition and quality after end-life dismantling from its earlier incarnation.

Design for reuse

Use bolted connections this allows easy dismantling
Provide easy access to connections
Keep the steel free from coatings or coverings for proper visual assessment.
Minimize the use of fixings to structural steel using clamped fittings.
Use long-span beams

Recycling and reuse enable the reduction of adverse impacts on the environment with added cost benefits. Steel is hundred percent recyclable and a high-end recovery rate has to be kept that way.

Scrap recycling is also on the increase as an eco-friendly practice.  During prefabrication raw material waste does occur but this can be easily collected and recycled.

The two aspects combined are leading the World to more sustainable development.

Factors That Influence Steel Price

Understanding the factors that play an important role in pricing and production is necessary for those in the fabrication industry.  The industry uses many types of metals derived from steel. Like any other raw material used in fabrication and manufacturing a number of factors are influential.

The factors affecting may not necessarily be local but nowadays global impacts are applicable to nearly all industries. Hence some of these are:

OIL Prices

Oil prices govern all industries that are energy-dependent directly or indirectly. More so the effect could be indirect because alternate energy production in a way is linked to oil prices. Fossil fuel is required during the production of steel hence high price means a high cost of production.

Demand

Both local and international steel demands affect the selling prices. It is a competitive industry and high or low demand has a definite impact on sales.

Construction

Steel in one form or other is required by the construction industry. Hence the demand for the raw material is directly in proportion to the construction activity. In recent times this industry is experiencing a boom in the US and many other countries of the World.

New methodologies like the fabrication of lightweight steel to make building parts have further the demand. World over the steel fabrication business is on the rise. This is due to cost reduction and the long-term benefits of lightweight steel fabrication. Quick installation is another virtue due to which this technology is gaining ground.

Steel No More Steel

After a lull in steel prices, the market seems to be picking up and a brighter forecast spells a steady rise in the segment. This is also the same with iron ore partly due to the rise in demand from the Chinese market. The demand from China seems to be improving steadily as demands arise from its infrastructure development projects.

There has been an improvement in steel demands in US and Europe as well. The imposition of anti-dumping duty has also benefited concerns like Arcelor Mittal.

But the biggest concern in news is the Tata's Steel concerns in the UK. Due to hurdles regarding the pension fund which has created a liability of seven hundred million pounds, it seems a sell-off is unlikely. A potential strategic partnership seems to be a better bet for the ailing business.  But this is a tardy process and is at a preliminary stage.  Another recourse is to cut costs as much as possible. How this will be brought is not clear.

The problem has arisen due to low prices in the steel market. This was in making as the World was oversupplied with steel. The China-driven demand faced a standoff due to slack in its industries. To make matters worse the local production of Chinese arose significantly. Excess production was dumped outside the country triggering stiff competition from global manufacturers.

The rising prices have raised some hopes till the Chinese concerns raise their output to offset the gain in prices.

Construction in US & Structural Steel Industry

Major aspect of economical health in North America has been the construction industry. But in the recent slow down the economy has suffered such that there has been a rapid down slide in the industry. Nevertheless with ever growing population the residential construction has been gradual but still significant. The negative impact has been furthered by the credit squeeze.

About six million tons steel was made use of in USA. With the total production of more than seven million tons USA is a net exporter of structural steel. This augurs that the industry is alive and kicking. The worker strength of the industry is  more that one hundred  fifty thousand. There are  more than two thousand local fabrication concerns spread all across America. They are servicing more than eight thousand projects.

As more and more buildings are being framed in structural steel the future is bright.

Structural Steel Fabrication What it is?

Third in line after the producers and service centers are the fabricators.   There are more than two thousand five hundred steel fabricators in USA. There job to fabricate hot rolled structural steel into desired parts and supply them to building projects.

Most of the fabricators are family owned enterprises with a long line of staff. Both skilled and semi skilled employees are required. Depending upon the scale of business up to hundred employees may be in the place. The projects handled may be for small store to large building projects like colonies, high rise skyscrapers and malls.

The detailed drawings or plan are always executed by licensed engineers or technicians. The structural components are based on design by experienced architects. The approved drawings are then set to work by steel detailers who refine the design to get the end product. These detailers may work directly with the staff or on sub contract where cutting drilling and welding leads to perfectly designed and accurate product.

Many fabricators provide in house erector or installation services. These vendors are more preferred since services obtained are under one roof.  The article makes structural steel fabricators tasks seem very simple but the complexities are enormous. Also rigid safety standard have to be pursued in US.

Structural Steel Fabrication Industry in USA

Fabrication is a process which accords shape and size to an element made of metal. This involves a number of process and technology. With regular advancements in technology there is a paradigm shift taking place as to how the industry surface.

Steel fabrication is a large industry in USA is most active in construction work. The raw steel produces many parts of building like windows, gates, staircase grills and what not. Hence no building is complete without the involvement of structural steel fabrication and its installation. The process is not limited to building parts it plays a major role in large projects like bridges, railways and industry in USA.

The process envisages the following steps.

Hot rolled steel smelted using an electric arc furnace. The use if ferrous scrap results in recycled content of more than eighty percent. The produces is in shape of hot rolled structural shape - beams, angles and plates.
Hollow structural sections are also manufactured the producers.

The service centers act as warehouse and are instrumental in initial processing before actual fabrication takes place.

The fabrication by major companies involves detailed drawings, cutting, shearing, welding and bolting. The complex process is guided by drawing by structural steel fabrication engineers.
Installation on spot fitting, welding, bolting on the construction site is the last stage of action.

The production of hot rolled structural steel exceeds way beyond eight million tons in USA and is constantly increasing.  At present there are three major manufacturers in United States that account for more than ninety percent of the produce.  A large percentage of the produces is utilized in building work.
